Assemblage consists of several anti-Van Buren satirical pieces issued by the Whig Party. Whig items criticize Democratic economic and banking policies, including references the Panic of 1837 and hard-currency advocate Thomas Hart Benton. The 1838 Am I Not a Woman & a Sister medal appears to criticize slavery. Six of these medals contrast a crashing Van Buren sailing ship named Experiment with a steadily-sailing Webster ship named Constitution. Donor Susan H. Douglas refers to these medals as Hard Times Tokens. References: Fischer 1988: 23-25.
