- Notes:
- A large poster celebrating the ratification by the states of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, enacting Prohibition as the law of the land. The large red "Numbers Indicate the Order in Which States Ratified," from the first, Mississippi, to the 45th, Pennsylvania. (Because ratification is required by only three-quarters of the states, and there were 48 states in 1919, all those above number 36 were purely for political show.) To the left and right and below the map are the seals of the ratifying states, along with the dates of ratification.
The combination of the ratification by virtually every state and the graphics of this map convey the impression of virtual unanimity, a national consensus in support of Prohibition - a notion soon put to rest by the pervasive disdain for the law and willingness to ignore it. Fourteen years later, Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment. For another map celebrating ratification, see ID #2283.02 (1919). For other maps related to Prohibition, see Subjects > Alcohol.
This poster was published by the Lincoln-Lee Legion, a temperance organization founded in 1903 and focused primarily on encouraging children to sign abstinence pledge cards. The League originally published this chart without the numbers in the states, and distributed it with 36 red stars to be pasted in the appropriate places as ratification proceeded, urging that it be 'hung IMMEDIATELY in every Sunday School room in America." https://archive.org/stream/abrahamlincolnshllllinc#page/n54/mode/1up, accessed August 15, 2016.
