Hungarian Section - Description:
- 3 pages. Letter from long-time IWO member Lillian E. Batcho applying for assistance to keep her child at Camp Kinderland since she is ill, must work and has no other childcare options. Shule #41 (Second Avenue and 14th Street) and the Hungarian Section are mentioned in regard to potentially promised financial aid not received. As a practical matter, the letter writes appears to assume the reader to be from the IWO or Camp Kinderland rather than the Fresh Air Fund. Pencilled remarks indicate that the child received a Abraham Rady Circle Fund scholarship (Emma Lazarus Division), which is verified by the Camp Kinderland scholarship list.
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans.
