- Description:
- A map showing the campus of Cornell University in the year 1946. Roads and footpaths are depicted as parallel lines and vary widths in accordance with real-world measurements. Streets are labeled with capitalized letters either on the inside or directly outside their parallel lines. Cascadilla Creek and Fall Creek are traced on the southern and northern edges of central campus, respectively. Beebe Lake is similarly depicted to the northeast of the central campus. The creeks and other water features are illustrated by concentric lines within their boundaries, and waterfalls are indicated with densely packed parallel lines. The Cortland Branch of the Lehigh Valley Railroad forms a small arch on the southeast corner of the map, indicated as a solid line with perpendicular bars. The footprints of the dozens of university buildings are shaded black and labelled with their name and the subject area of the courses and research held within. Slightly larger labels note the different college groupings, including the Veterinary College and the College of Agriculture. The footprints of fraternity housing are illustrated in the western and northern areas of campus and are labelled with their occupying fraternities. The footprints of future buildings are outlined with dashed lines. Two clusters of buildings in the western area of campus are accompanied by a lettered key, listing the names of men’s dormitories and fraternity buildings. The Village of Forest Home in the northeast corner of the map is labelled but no buildings are illustrated. The extent of the map stretches from Brook Lane in the north to Mitchell Street in the south, and University Avenue in the west to Caldwell Road on the far eastern side of campus, past a cluster of buildings labelled “Temporary Family Dwelling Units.”
