Maps
Cornell University Buildings
- Description:
- A decorative, illustrated map of the Cornell University Campus and vicinity in the year 1928. The map is oriented with East at the top of the page. Campus buildings are drawn in three dimensions at their locations and shaded light tan, while surrounding buildings not owned by Cornell are depicted as simple rectangular outlines. Buildings are labelled with their building name or address number. Roads throughout the campus and surrounding neighborhoods are depicted as parallel lines, shaded light tan, and labelled in their interior. Fall Creek and Cascadilla Creek are illustrated at the north and south areas of campus, respectively, along with Beebe Lake in the northeast. Their gorges are rendered in three dimensions and shaded light tan. Cartoon-like illustrations are dotted throughout the map, depicting common activities in parts of campus as well as depictions of flora and fauna. For instance, golfers are depicted near the country club to the north of campus, engineers taking measurements are found on central campus in the Arts Quad, while figures engaged in various military formations and sports activities are drawn in the fields to the east of central campus. Barnyard animals are drawn in the eastern area of campus near the agricultural buildings, while bugs are scattered throughout the map. Beebe Lake contains images of fish, mythical creatures, and a Viking style boat. A large, decorative compass rose is included in northeast corner of the map. The map extends from Wyckoff Road in the north to Mitchell Street in the south, University Ave in the west to Judd Falls Road in the east. A decorative border extends around the map. The top left corner contains a drawing labelled “seniors” depicting five individuals in graduation caps and gowns, posed as if singing. Continuing down the left side, the border contains an image of McGraw Tower and its clockface below a banner stating, “they soon will be leaving this school of Cornell,” followed by an illustration of several figures of various dress and age. Banners of text are dispersed throughout, including “music with the twilight falls o’er the dreaming lake and dell,” “hail! hail the gang’s all here,” and “ye big parade alumni.” The bottom left corner of the border contains an illustration of a young individual sitting at a desk topped with a pile of books, labelled “frosh” and accompanied by a banner stating, “he misses his mamma and doesn’t feel well.” Moving right along the bottom border, the first block states “while breezes blow or waters flow, we’ll honor thee Cornell.” A second block contains a depiction of a large, masted ship upon a large body of water, with primates and a squirrel hanging in trees in the foreground. The third block states “far above Cayuga’s waters with its waves of blue stands our noble alma mater glorious to view.” The fourth block depicts a Viking-style boat, a crew rowing a boat, an Indigenous figure in a canoe, and a figure on a mythical water creature. The fifth and final block of the bottom row contains the text “Cornell victorious the champions of all. Cheer! Cheer! Oh here we are! Here we are again.” The bottom right corner depicts three individuals with books, labelled “soph’more.” Text above the corner states “he cuts quite a swell for a man of his age.” The right border contains a grouping of activities carried out by individuals in Roman-style garb including chariot racing, lion taming, and spectating. These scenes are framed by a clown figure and the phrase “A Roman holiday spring day” at the bottom and figures engaging in winter activities with the phrase “when winter comes” at the top. The top right corner contains an illustration of two sharply dressed figures engaged in a dance, labelled “junior” and accompanied by the phrase “he’s not been wasting his time at Cornell.” The top border contains the images of founder Ezra Cornell and first president Andrew Dickson White. On the right side, next to Ezra Cornell, a block of text states “’I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.’ Ezra Cornell.” On the left side of the border, next to Andrew Dickson White, a block of text states “Andrew Dickson White 1866-1885, Charles Kendall Adams 1885-1892, Jacob Gould Schurman 1892-1920, Livingston Farrand 1921.”
