Founded by a French King as a port from which to launch a crusade to the Holy Land. Large gridiron on extensive sandy flat site, originally near edge of Mediterranean Sea. Rectangle of modest size. Surrounded by high stone walls with massive gates on land and sea sides. High fortified tower at one corner which also served as lighthouse.
