Erected in 1956-58 on the former site
of four faculty residences
which stood on Grove Place,
an extension of East Avenue.
These residences,
Like others on the campus,
Were built on lots
Leased from the University.
1 Grove Place:
Built in 1888 by Professor Harry E. Hutchins, Law.
Occupied successively by Professor Charles E. Bennett, Latin and Literature
Professor Ernest Merritt, Physics
And staff of the Southeast Asia Program.
2 Grove Place:
Built in 1888 by Dr. Edward Hitchcock,
Physical Culture and Hygiene,
Occupied by Professor Frederick C. Prescott, English.
3 Grove place:
Built in 1888 by Professor Brainard G. Smith,
Rhetoric and Oratory.
Occupied successively by George W. Harris,
University Librarian
Professor Charles K. Burdick, Law
and Professor Ernest W. Rettger, Mechanics.
5 Grove Place:
Built in 1892 by Professor George P. Bristol, Greek.
Occupied Successively by John L. Mott, Counselor of Students
Dean S. C. Hollister, Engineering
