- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of West XII depicting three standing male figures and a horse. Fig. 22 is nude except for the chlamys fastened around his neck with a round brooch. He stands frontally, resting his weight on his left leg. His head is shown in profile, turned to the right (viewer's) and down, and he extends his right arm across his torso to meet with his left hand, in which he holds an unidentified object. Fig. 23 stands just to the right of center of the block wearing a short, belted chiton and a chlamys. He is posed frontally, with his torso twisted slightly towards the left and with his head in profile facing left. He casts his gaze up and raises his right hand. He holds a rod in his left hand at hip level. Fig. 24, a boy, stands at the rear of the horse. He is shown in profile looking down to his right hand, bent up to hold an object. Over his left shoulder he carries a himation. The horse, backgrounded in the center of the block, lowers its head to scratch its snout on its left front leg. Its wavy, mannered mane lies flat along its curved neck. This cast preserves details of West XII no longer discernible on the original frieze block, which remained in situ on the Parthenon until 1993.
