- Notes:
- One of a series of maps by Woodbridge communicating a great amount of information, perhaps most interestingly the "Degree of Civilization . . . of Each Country." The legend offers four subjective "States" of civilization: Savage, Barbarous, Half civilized, and Civilized. (Other editions of this map include a fifth state, Enlightened.) But "Neither [the] map, nor Woodbridge's text, defines its terms. Intuitively, the reader must know what constitutes a savage or barbarous state and what separates [them from] a civilized country . . . ." Delaney 2012, 12. How can it be that virtually all of Central and South America was either Savage or Civilized? And why was virtually all of Canada Savage - and so little of the Western United States, or even Africa?
