John Bunyan was an English preacher, best known for his work "The Pilgrim's Progress," first published in 1678. See Delaney 2012, 201. The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical work describing the passage of man through life, and many editions contain an map of the journey, the "Plan of the Road from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City." The collection includes two versions of the Plan: ID #1038 (1821) and ID # 1055 (1850).
This is a different kind of "Mapp" produced by Bunyan, a chart that summarizes his theological views. See Campbell 1981. There are two halves of the map, separated by "The Passage Into and Out of the World." Conduct on the left half of the map, following the theological guidance and biblical verses provided in the circles, leads to the angel of heaven shown at the lower left. The right side is printed in bold face text, with darker circles: "These lines are black and so are those/That do eternal life oppose." Following this course leads "into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil," shown by the great beast at the lower right.
