 - Notes:
 - These two maps highlight a series of promotional materials (ID ##1227.01-.03) for properties developed by Winkler-Yates Oil Royalties and its principal, Leo F. Reardon. Among the claims in these materials: "Thundering Flood of Yates Oil Shatters All Records in Annals of Oil!" "Where in Oildom Is There a Finer Royalty Spread Than This?" Two years later, in Fort Worth federal court, Leo Reardon was convicted of fraud in connection with these ventures and sentenced to Leavenworth. Corsicana [Texas] Daily Sun, December 13, 1930. Pending appeal, he became a fugitive from justice and was eventually arrested in New Orleans. Palm Beach News, January 5, 1932.
From the end of the 19th century through the 1930s, maps were often used in brochures and other materials promoting the sale of shares in speculative oil and mining ventures. The collection includes a number of such maps in circumstances where there is evidence – sometimes compelling – that fraud or other misconduct was involved. For others, Search > speculative.
