- A map of World War II issued as a promotion for Arpeako Meat Products. It lists the populations of the "Allied Nations" and the "Axis Powers," along with their "Affiliated Nations" and "Occupied Territories" and the populations of large cities. The map shows the world's major "Sea Lanes" and "Airways." At the top of the map are 10 "Important Instructions on 'What To Do' During an Air Raid or Blackout," along with "Dos" and Don'ts." The company's products are listed at the upper corners, along with the slogan, "You Can Look the World Over But You Won't Find Meat Products to Equal Arpeako!"
It seems unlikely that Arpeako needed additional promotional efforts to sell its products during the war. From the outset of World War II, it was apparent that the country would face shortage of many commodities, including food. Imports of foreign goods were curtailed, domestic transportation was effectively limited (by shortages of gasoline and tires), and food was diverted to military bases and support of our allies abroad. By the Spring of 1942, the national food rationing program had begun, and while the formal rationing of meat may not have been underway when this map was published, there would already have been severe shortages and "voluntary" rationing.
