- This advertising map for International Salt makes use of several persuasive cartography techniques. First, it is a cartogram, with each state's size altered in proportion to its population. Because the company's offices generally correlate with population, this technique increases the accuracy - and effectiveness - of the image. Second the midwestern and central states are blacked out, and the Pacific Coast states omitted entirely, obscuring the company's representation in those areas.
