- This is a promotional map for the Washington State office of the National Youth Administration (NYA), a New Deal agency that operated from 1935 to 1943. The verso provides a variety of information intended for potential applicants, including “What Is NYA?,” eligibility, purpose, scope, how training is provided, and where to apply.
As described on the verso, NYA had two programs, both aimed at those aged 17 to 24. One program helped support the ability of selected students to stay in school “by providing them with remunerative work to help cover expenses.” The other attempted “to give each youth the chance to get that work experience which will enable him to qualify as a skilled worker with a place in private employment, special emphasis being placed on national defense work.” Examples of these out-of-school projects are shown on the map, including wood shops, metal shops, welding shops, “radio,” sewing and “national defense training.”
At the time of this map, the text verso shows that the NYA was administered by the Federal Security Agency, which dates it to the period 1939-1942. Given the emphasis on national defense, it was likely published in 1941 or 1942.
