- Notes:
- These two maps appear side by side in a book by Harold G. Cardozo, who is described on the title page as “Special correspondent of the London ‘Daily Mail’ with the Nationalist Forces in Spain.” Although many writers and reporters covering the Spanish Civil War (most notably Earnest Hemingway) supported the Republican side, Cardozo was intensely committed to the Nationalist forces. His book includes an adoring chapter on “Franco, Generalissimo and Chief of State,” and the maps convey at a glance the extensive gains of the Franco forces over an 11 month period.
For a similar map conveying the same situation at a time more favorable to the Republican forces by the radical journalist H. N. Brailsford, see ID #1252.
