Boardman, Mabel

- Description:
- Mabel Boardman (1860-1946), a prominent socialite in Washington circles, was one of Alice Roosevelt's chaperones. She was also a good friend of William Howard Taft. With a re-chartering of the American Red Cross in 1905, Taft was appointed its president by Theodore Roosevelt, while in effect Boardman ran the organization. Boardman established the Red Cross as a strong national organization with many branches, a large membership, and a substantial endowment. Her forty five years of service to the Red Cross encompassed both world wars and earned national and international honors.
