Design a pedestrian space related to the existing surrounding urban context including the Trinity Church designed by H. H. Richardson in 1872, the Boston Public Library, designed by McKim Mead and White in 1888, a large commercial hotel and Boylston Street.
The design for Copley Square included raising the plaza above the street to the level of the floor of Trinity Church and its Rectory, to strengthen the relationship to the church for activities such as weddings and other church related events that would flow from the Plaza into and out of the Church. In addition, the change in level would create a visual separation between pedestrians at the plaza level and the vehicular traffic at the street level. The Plaza would be paved with local stone and brick in a formal pattern, and would include a water fountain, statue/kiosk of Philip Brooks [former rector of Trinity Church, who inspired the appointment of H. H. Richardson as the architect], linden shade trees, pedestrian benches and lighting. - Format:
