This map, the only large, separate map included in Booth's massive study, was produced "to give to the ordinary reader, at a glance, an impression of the ubiquitous and manifold character of the three most important social influences." Two categories of elementary school are shown, along with the six categories of places of worship and five different types of "Houses Licensed to Sell Intoxicating Drinks," depending on the nature of the license. What one case see "at a glance" is that the black circles of public houses overwhelm the red badges of religion and the grey elementary schools. See generally See generally Vaughan 2018, 180-85.
