- The spread of "Germanness" in the world, particularly to the United States. The scale of the large red circles in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. is subject to arbitrary manipulation. There is an implicit assumption that German immigrants to the U.S. maintained their "Germanness," although that seems unlikely as to some (for example, those who fled after the failed revolution of 1848).
