- Notes:
- This arresting 1917 advertisement for the British Napier seems to hint that the automobile might be able to drive across the Irish channel. Or perhaps it is a more subtle suggestion that the Napier might somehow ease the tensions between Britain and Northern Ireland following the bloody Easter Rising of 1916 and the growing popularity of Sinn Fein at the time. In any case, it was a suitable image for a successful product.
The company was founded by David Napier in 1808 and maintained a good reputation throughout the 19th century for its production of high-quality engines and other industrial machinery. David's grandson Montague was a racing cyclist and was persuaded to try his hand at producing an automobile, first marketed in 1900. For the next ten years, the reputation of the company's engines and vehicles was enhanced by a number of successes at auto and motor yacht racing. A Napier was the first racing car painted the color now known as British Racing Green, and a Napier was the first car to cross the Canadian Rockies. The company's cars were the "thoroughbreds" of their time, including "Rolls-Royce calibre luxury automobiles," and they were produced until 1924. English 2013.
