Cornell University Buildings - Measurement:
- unknown:100 (scale)
- Description:
- A map of Cornell Campus roads and structures in the year 1896. Roads and footpaths are depicted as parallel lines and vary widths in accordance with real-world measurements. Streets are labeled with italic, capitalized names either within or on the outside edges of the roads. Dotted lines are aligned with every 25-foot change in elevation, illustrating topography and steep slope on the western side of campus. Cascadilla Creek and Fall Creek and their gorges are illustrated at the southern and northern extents of the map, respectively, illustrated by hashmarks pointing towards the bottom of the gorge. The rivers and other small water features are illustrated by concentric lines within their boundaries. The footprints of seventy-two buildings are drawn on the map and shaded in black. The structures within the depicted area are annotated with numbers corresponding to a key on the left and right margins of the map. The key lists the names of university buildings, typed in red, and the residences of professors, typed in black. Text along the bottom of the map states "The University estate comprises altogether two hundred and seventy acres of land. About one hundred and ten acres are devoted to the uses of the Agricultural department, for experimental purposes, and for the illustration of the principles and practice of Agriculture; while about thirty acres are under the direction of the Professor of Horticulture. The Campus and ornamental grounds embrace nearly eighty acres, and about fifty acres are in the margins of Fall and Cascadilla Creeks."
