- Description:
- A map of the development plan for Cornell University, prepared under direction of the Architectural Advisory Council in May of 1946. The map is oriented with East at the top of the page. Cascadilla Creek and Fall Creek are traced on the southern and northern edges of central campus, respectively, with simple lines delineating their extent and the gorges that contain them. Beebe Lake is similarly depicted with a simple outline to the northeast of the central campus. The footprints of the dozens of existing university buildings and residential homes are drawn on the map, with bold lines noting instructional buildings and dormitories. New proposed buildings and expansions to existing buildings are depicted with diagonal shading and include expansions to the men’s and women’s dormitories and to many engineering, agricultural, and sports facilities on campus. Buildings cluster primarily in the central area of campus, but other groupings are found in the residential area of Forest Home in the northeast quadrant, and the agricultural and engineering area at the eastern extent of campus. Both existing and proposed university buildings are labelled with capitalized letters within their boundaries or in the spaces directly outside the footprints, and some residential buildings and fraternities are labelled similarly. The extent of map stretches from Thurston Avenue in the north to Dryden Road in the south, and Stewart Avenue in the west to an unlabeled road on the far eastern side of campus, near the agricultural instruction buildings.
