- Hobbing machining is a process that uses a specialized milling machine to cut gears, splines, and sprockets. The process involves using a cutting tool called a hob, which is a cylindrical tool with helical teeth, to progressively cut the gear teeth into a material like metal or plastic. The hob and the workpiece rotate continuously until all the teeth are cut.
