- Description:
- This is a damaged cast of Parthenon metope South 29, a damaged original, depicting a centaur carrying off a Lapith woman. The centaur, bearded and staring into the distance beyond the viewer, grasps the Lapith around the waist and upright and gallops towards the viewer's right with her. In this cast, his body is broken in two, and the ends of all legs are broken away, whereas in the original parts of only two legs are missing. Here, as in the original, the centaur's right arm is missing, as is his tail. The Lapith wears a long, belted chiton that has slipped down to leave bear her left shoulder and breast, and a chlamys that flows behind her and the torso of the centaur. Here as in the original, she is missing her head, right arm, and part of her right foot. In the 1890s, this metope was on display with architectural casts in the Architectural Museum in Lincoln Hall. It does not have a Sage Collection number in the Sage catalogue (p. 35).
